More on Decision Making & Game Shows

From the NYTimes:

And Behind Door #1, A Fatal Flaw

Basically when you are presented 3 blind choices (where one offers a reward) and you randomly pick one (door A) — but are then shown one of the duds (door C) now leaving only 2 choices (door A or B) and are given a chance to rethink your selection — you should ALWAYS change your pick (door B).

The Cannonball Run and the Birth of the Mainstream Big Game

This is my paper and presentation for Frank Lantz’s Big Games class

The year is 1981. In January, Ronald Reagan is inaugurated as the 40th President. And then shot by John Hinckley, Jr. two months later. He’s not the only one to survive an assassin: in May, Pope John Paul II is shot in Rome. In June, the first recognized cases of AIDS are reported by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A new cable channel launches in August called MTV and eventually – for better or worse – revolutionizes media. Bob Marley dies. Paris Hilton is born. And all the while the Cold War rages on. In a word, 1981 sucked. In retrospect, if ever there was a year where the world needed some fun, it was perhaps this particular year. The world needed a laugh. The world needed a game.

Behind the Scenes

Don’t worry, I’m not going to pontificate this time…

Instead, here’s a couple of links that might be worth checking out for anyone who wants to know more about Metal Gear and Shadow of the Colossus. On the Metal Gear site, check out the “Kojima Commentary” section, which provides a transcript of a running audio commentary the Japanese apparently got with their special editions. As for the SOTC article, after you deal with the fact that it’s a very technical piece and a bit hard to understand if you don’t know much about the technology, it becomes a really interesting read.

A Brief and Incomplete History of Game Studies

This is something that I wrote up real quick one night for my thesis and I thought it might be interesting to some of you and give others a context for this week’s reading. It’s a roughly chronological overview of all the major thinkers in game studies and a paragraph about their primary contributions, as well as a couple of outside theorists. Please understand that it’s in no way exhaustive, there are some big names that I’ve left out such as Bernard Suits, Brian Sutton-Smith, and James Gee. Feel free leave comments about what you think should be added.
